Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
